All songs written by Gregory Porter, and arranged by Porter, Chip Crawford and Kamau Kenyatta, except where noted. Recommencing with the water analogy that characterized his debut disc, Porter saw Liquid Spirit as a logical progression in his burgeoning discography as it touched on some of the same themes, particularly the highs and lows of romance, his childhood, and socio-political observations.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. We are happy to share our knowledge and passion with you, providing expertise and support for your new or evolving business. This is still evident to some extent and Chip Crawford, as main collaborator and pianist is excellent throughout - whether as accompanist or soloist. After two solid albums on Motema, both of which earned Grammy nominations, Gregory Porter made his Blue Note debut with Liquid Spirit in 2013.

We offer a range of machines in multiple configurations, and we’ll work closely with you to find the perfect fit for your business. I could go into details about the melancholy blues genius that is Water Under Bridges, the perfectly arranged cover of The In Crowd or the other 15 or so tracks (there are 19 presented) but all are just superb. His playing on the Jazz standard "I Fall in Love too Easily" is the real thing - a wonderful slow ballad that at nearly 8 minutes, stands out as the exception here and an authentic Jazz performance, that would grace any New York Jazz club or classic album. There are a fair number of reviews that say this album is not as good as previous ones, but for me this is an all time classic. So for me Gregory … lets have more of this… it’s unique and refreshing…and transcends your earlier mainstream jazz albums.

However, this album sees a move away to more and shorter tracks - mostly around 3-4 minutes, with less of the Jazz improvisation and solos we had on the previous two albums. The material is again mostly original compositions, with a couple of Jazz standards and the old favourite : "The In Crowd" which has been covered by many people, but here receives a suitably Jazzy treatment. But now that he is recording for the art form's marquis label, Porter has the chance to change the art, to enrich the audience, to sing from a higher mountaintop. Musicianship is excellent throughout, but I would like to have heard more improvisation and real Jazz - more of a live gig feel. Movin'" also has some of the authentic Jazz of previous albums and "Liquid Spirit" is probably the most exciting track with its syncopated Double Bass line driving the band. Each part gets a share of the gospel harmonies and your singers need to be on their toes with rhythm and timing.

Do yourself a favour, if you're feeling stressed, pour yourself a drink of your choosing and put this album on. Every detail in the bass, cymbal etc is presented and every hammer strike in the piano carries a meaningful emotion. There are few albums where when you want to sit back with a glass of wine and unwind that you don’t end up reaching for the skip button for some of the tracks… but this is one of those rarities. The Independent's Phil Johnson noted "The soulful vocalist follows his two excellent indie albums with a major-label debut that contains few surprises yet deepens the story so far". Of course, he has such an amazing voice that this is all justified - but what made him stand out from the crowd before, was the Jazz musicianship and sophistication.
