Description

Rosalind King has previously starred as Dahlia in the original movie series and now, young Posy Starling is taking the character back to the silver screen. The way she is described in the first book and until the page where they visit Brigitte in London, that lady never touched a biscuit - if anything, Caro would be the one hoping for biscuits with tea. She will have to work with her now ex-husband again on the upcoming Dahlia Lively movie and when she accidentally discovers a secret passage and disappears, she takes this one-of-a-lifetime opportunity to roll out well-deserved justice. You will need to have read the first in this series to understand what lead them to Wales for filming.

This would make an excellent holiday read - it took me longer than an average crime novel as it has a lot more depth to it than I expected, but that was all to the good! Rosalind receiving death threats, a missing Casting Director and a hit-and-run death of one of the film's stars prompts another Three Dahlias investigation, to discover whether the events are connected and who is to blame. I also love the way the plot echoes those classic golden age themes, here the isolated community with secrets. In this latest addition to the Dahlia Lively series, A Very Lively Murder, the three Dahlias, Caro, Rosalind, and Posy, are reunited once again and back sleuthing on the set of The Lady Detective when it quickly becomes apparent that there’s a murderer amongst the cast when threats, victims, accidents, and dead bodies all start piling up. Katy Watson is the most perfect scene setter, so much so that I felt like I was at Ty Gwyn solving these murders myself. The friendship that has formed despite the initial professional rivalry between the three leads is something that we need more of in not only literature but in life. As in the previous book, there are plenty of red herrings and our trip get upto plenty of mischief, but there is no doubt that only the 'Three Dahlias' can solve the mystery as the body count rises and their own lives are all put in peril! The way in which the author has at the start of each chapter an extract from one of the Dahlia books is brilliant ( i would love to read them .

I hadn't read the previous novel (though plan to now) but this one works just fine as a standalone as there are references to the events of the last book, and plenty of background to the characters.I fairly zoomed through this one, clever, a little bit of old school murder and detection and a very satisfying conclusion. A murder mystery with a nod to the golden era, three strong female lead characters and a locked room scenario. Truth be told, Nina would not have fitted either, as she was pregnant, so why would she risk it all revenging something that happened 8 years ago now, when she is happy and about to have a baby, which she is excited about. This follow-up to The Three Dahlias finds our trio of actresses—Rosalind, Caro, and Posy, all past or present portrayers of the Golden Age detective Dahlia Lively—on the trail of another murderer. I am unsure what happened there, I might need to re-read the last part of 'The Three Dahlias' as for the life of me I can't tell why Anton hates her now and she is left out of the movie.

I also preferred the more frequent switching between the point of views of Posy, Rosalind and Caro rather than each character being a narrator for around a third each as in the first book. At the beginning we are in Caro's home, she is not part of the movie that's being made and feels left out and confused as to what to do next in life. Posy had also registered the presence of Dominic Laugharne, another well-known actor of the old school. The relationship between the three leading ladies (The Three Dahlias) is well observed, each bringing their different strengths to the investigation. Before the three friends can solve the mystery, a death occurs leading the Dahlias to also start their own murder investigation.

An absolute treat of a read with all the ingredients of a vintage murder mystery: a country house, mysterious dead bodies and three actresses all keen to catch the killer.I really liked the atmosphere the book created with the North Wales setting and brooding weather conditions. An avid reader and notebook collector, her dream was to combine the two hobbies by becoming an author and, after spending her teenage years reading paperback Christies on rainy Welsh caravan holidays, it seemed inevitable that one day she'd try writing her own crime novel.
