As her convictions are tested, she and Nelson must discover how Aboriginal skulls, drug smuggling and the Aboriginal ritual of The Dreaming may hold the answer to these deaths – and be the key to their own survival. One of the characters that is married gets pregnant and just ends things with her lover and it doesn't cross her mind that it might be his or she is so unethical that wants to bestow the child to her husband even though it might not be his!

The story would probably be a reasonable one that you could see working on TV (maybe this is the author's aim) being your standard situation crime-drama.

In this book I was so worried about the mystical and magical re curses and such and was so glad that eventually a scientific explanation was provided as a possible probably probable explanation. Cathbad, little Kate, Ruth and DI Nelson remain steadfast in their characterisation, making it a sound fourth novel in the series. If you're wondering if you need to have read the other books in the series, the answer is no: however if you haven't read them, they're better books than this one! Whilst slowly coming to terms with motherhood and the lack of sleep, Ruth is never less than certain that having a child was what she always wanted but, rest assured, her usual dry humour is in fine fettle throughout. Ruth's one year old daughter Kate is also delightful and I'll be interested to see if Ruth's reignited relationship with Max develops.Suspicions about the pressure group known as the Elginists and the rather aristocratic racehorse trainer, Lord Danforth Smith ensure Nelson keeps digging and when a second death within a week connected to the museum occurs, also attributed to natural causes, Nelson knows that that he is finally getting closer to the truth. Doctor Ruth Galloway, Head of Forensic Archaeology at the University of North Norfolk, is not thinking about coffins or journalists or even about whether she will encounter DCI Harry Nelson at the Smith Museum. I will admit I’m reading these books for the soap opera like relationship of the main characters above all else. Griffiths' excellent series is well-informed and original, and its setting in one of the bleaker corners of East Anglia is vividly evoked' Literary Review.

As the series progresses and readers learn more about the secondary characters who surround Ruth, the tension between the pairings of Shona and Phil, DS Dave Clough and field archaeologist, Trace and the more recent development of DS Judy Johnson and Cathbad come into their own and these elements become almost as critical to proceedings as the Nelson and Ruth connection. Elly Griffith's great strength is in tempering the mystical new age messages from Cathbad, with the no- nonsense attitude of atheist Ruth and the out and out scepticism of Nelson. With Nelson keeping his distance, Ruth finds herself torn between being relieved, yet also missing their connection.and do love Cathbad though in the context or ar/veganism I’m always so disappointed to see him always decked out in feather, dead animal skins, furs, etc. As her convictions are tested, Ruth and Nelson must discover how Aboriginal skulls, drug smuggling, and the mystery of "The Dreaming" hold the answer to these deaths, as well as the keys to their own survival. Ruth Galloway is a remarkable, delightful character: brilliant, wry, determined, and independent, almost to a fault—readers are sure to clamor for the next book in the series.
